Right after I got back from Europe, I quickly beat the post vaca blues because I was lucky enough to visit Spiaggia to try one of their tasting menus. Chef Tony Manutano ordered me a glass of champagne (ahh!) and proceeded to delight us with the most beautiful meal. I mean, reeally – how lucky am I?!
The meal started with this creative little cup. It looked a lot like a cappuccino, but it was actually an artichoke and truffle soup garnished with a crisp made out of Parmigiano Reggiano.
It was also presented with these scoops of lardo fois gras – something new to me. I’ve never had anything like it, but if it’s dusted with black truffle, I guess I can get on board, right?!
We spread it on grilled pieces of focaccia bread, and I’ve got news for you – this is what heaven tastes like.
The second course was a lightly fried squash blossom with robiola. I always have a large appreciation for squash blossoms – mostly because I’ve never mastered it myself! This one was crisp and light and cheesy and I didn’t want it to end.
Now, the bucatini. You might have seen this picture on Instagram, because I couldn’t wait to tell you guys all about it!! First of all, bucatini is my favorite pasta noodle ever. Second, I’m a sucker for truffles. Put them together?! STOP.
And another overhead shot, because I’m in love. And what’s that on top? It’s a perfectly fried little piece of sweetbreads. Don’t even think about it, just eat it.
The meal continued with a stunning octopus dish. I’m a big fan of octopus even though I rarely eat it, so this was a treat! It was perfectly cooked and sat on a little bit of light as air whipped potatoes and a strip of huckleberry sambuca sauce. I wish I had a good overhead shot of this on my camera, because it was so pretty. Please forgive me!
And finally, dessert. I’ve mentioned this a million times here, so bear with me as I repeat for new readers that I’m not a huge dessert person. I like to point this out, because when I want to eat a whole plate of a dessert, that really means something! These little corn cakes with frutti di bosco were just the right amount of sweet; and all of the textures on the plate worked together perfectly.
So… are you dying to go to Spiaggia now?! Go go go!!
